You’ve heard the cliches: You can’t pour from an empty cup. You’ve got to put on your own oxygen mask before you can help others. You’ve even seen the self care prescription plans: get enough sleep, take a warm bath, go for a walk, etc.
Of course these kinds of mantras and interventions can be helpful, but I think they miss the key point.
Authentic self care is about creating and practicing a relationship with yourself. It’s about noticing what’s happening in your mind, body and spirit and responding with compassion. It’s about intentionally being there for yourself, and maybe that looks like setting boundaries with others, or taking a warm bath, but more deeply, it looks like protecting your self and validating your feelings and experiences.
Today is the day after Christmas, and for many, it’s a season that is jam packed with tons of "adulting"—planning, wrapping, cooking, cleaning, hosting, parenting, etc. In general, it’s an actual fury of tasks and demands. Its also a time that can be a painful reminder for many who have lost loved ones or for those who never had the love and "magic" they needed from the people in their lives. In short, the holidays can be stressful and distressful. A self care plan can help, but I think it's important to go deeper.
This holiday season, give yourself the gift of a loving relationship. This IS authentic self care, and it also happens to be the most Important goal of any therapy. Creating Space Counseling and Wellness can help you get started!
